Picasso’s Blue Period (1901-1904) began with a journey through Spain and the suicide of a friend. He became depressed and painted in blue hues and austere colors and his subject matter was often of the downtrodden of society.

The second most expensive Picasso painting, Garcon a la Pipe, is a portrait of a Parisian working boy. The boy holds a pipe in his hand and wears a string of roses on his head like a crown. Picasso painted this masterpiece when he was only 24. As the colors suggest, this artwork belongs to Picasso’s Rose Period.(1904-1906) It fetched $104 million at the Sotheby’s auction in 2004
